Jewellers' Guild

Image

In 1965, Donald Cook and his father Forrest, purchased a lapidary shop from an accomplished stone cutter, Eugene Leyendecker, in downtown Boston. For the next year, Eugene worked with Donald, teaching him the exacting skill of gem cutting. To perfect his jewelry making expertise, Donald apprenticed for two years with Carmen Fushetti, a Florentine master jeweler.

As word of Donald’s skill emerged, he received several custom jewelry commissions. Donald became accomplished in design, as well as gem cutting and jewelry repair. Area museums and schools hired him to teach courses, prompting Donald to open his own school.

In 1971, Judith enrolled as a student. Donald was impressed by Judith’s style and creativity. They collaborated on designs while continuing to produce their individual work. Donald and Judith married and, in time, were blessed with several children including daughter, Jemma and twins, Douglas and Deanna. At age 15, the twins began cutting stones and fabricating jewelry. Deanna continues to make her own unique designs. Jemma assists with purchasing, and also crafts pearl necklaces and rings.

The Jewellers’ Guild is a collaborative family business specializing in rings, using a variety of unusual gemstones including freshwater pearls. Sterling silver combined with yellow, pink or green gold is their trademark. All Jewellers’ Guild pieces are completely handcrafted and individually signed by the artist.

By the Bay Gallery is proud to include Jewellers’ Guild handcrafted jewelery in our ever expanding collection of fine quality American Crafts.
