Mayauel Ward Art Glass: Mayauel Ward
“I am as fascinated by the beauty of glass as I am challenged by the technical difficulty of creating it.” The creative mind and skillful hands of California native, Mayauel Ward create vases, perfume bottles and paper weights of layered glass fashioned into delicate flowers and detailed underwater scenes. Always working on new designs, Mayauel’s mind is filled with ideas awaiting the challenge of being created in glass. Mayauel Ward was born and raised in Manhattan Beach, California where he still lives with his wife and two sons. While attending, El Camino College, he enrolled in a glassblowing class and was immediately hooked on the craft. Upon completing his studies, Mayauel worked for Correia Art Glass in Santa Monica. Then in 1979, he went to work for his former teacher, good friend and future brother-in-law, Stuart Abelman. He worked at Abelman Art Glass creating floral vases and light sculptures until establishing his own studio.
In 1988, Mayauel Ward started his own glass business, making lampworked paperweights from his home in Manhattan Beach. He still creates his delicate, one of a kind floral and bouquet paperweights in very limited numbers. Recently, Mayauel has added floral and coral reef vases, perfume bottles and torchworked paperweights to his line. Surfing and snorkeling are favorite activities of Mayauel and this love of the ocean is reflected in his aquarium and coral reef pieces. Mayauel’s work is known for its very fine detail and is in great demand. His work is actively collected both in the United States and internationally. By the Bay Gallery is proud to include the work of Mayauel Ward in our collection of the finest in American crafts.
