Designed by Patrick Murphy, these elegant earrings feature 10.6 carats of Black Quartz Druse (15mm x 11.5mm) and Red Spinel 0.24 tw. Presented in 14k Yellow Gold, each earring features hand made french clip closures and measures approximately 1 1/2"h x 1/2"w.

There are two types of black druse, psilomelane and onyx. Psilomelane druse is a rich, natural-black metallic mineral covered with quartz crystals; Black onyx druse has both quartz crystal and matrix. Mined sporadically in only one place in the world, psilomelane druse is found in a small area of New Mexico. Gem-quality psilomelane druse is very rare; only 2% is pure black, without its usual intermingling of a grey-white.

About the Work

Patrick Murphy has been making jewelry for over 30 years. Constantly in search of unique material, many of the gemstones he finds are often so rare that people have never seen nor heard of them. Nearly all of Patrick’s work is hand fabricated including lapidary, since it is difficult to find cutters who are able to produce the shapes and sizes that he requires. Most gems are set in bezels because it makes a clean frame around the stone. Also, bezels are much more secure than other types of settings.
